GOP senators sound off after Trump says ‘I love the inflation’

President Donald Trump brushed off a spike in inflation driven by his war in Iran, insisting on Wednesday that “the numbers were great.”

“I love it,” he said of new data that showed annual inflation hitting a three-year high. “I love the inflation.”

Trump’s remarks came shortly after the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that annual inflation hit 4.2% in May, propelled mainly by energy costs that have risen sharply since the US first struck Iran earlier this year.

CNN’s Manu Raju speaks with Republican senators Josh Hawley (MO), Tommy Tuberville (AL), Shelley Moore Capito (WV) and Kevin Cramer (ND) for their takes on cost spikes for American consumers.

CNN’s Omar Jimenez discusses with his News Central panel, and CNN Business senior reporter David Goldman digs into the inflation numbers. Also, Rep. Marlin Stutzman (R-IN) shares his concerns about rising inflation.

  1. Just the mention of war and food prices started rising and has not stopped. Wait until the actual war and the costs incurred because of oil prices start to hit. We are months away. These places started gouging on the pretense of “oil unable to pass through the Strait is causing it “ and most items have doubled and more. Everyday it’s increasing on food and we haven’t seen anything yet. These oligarchs are loving this and getting away with it.

  2. This is what happens when you destroy the trust of your country by manipulating everything you say and do as a leader. People stop listening and trusting you.

  3. No, Senator Cramer, Americans are not confident. We are trying to end an unpopular war which has caused a record high affordability crisis in this country and around the world. I honestly appreciate the optimism from the president, telling us it's going to be okay. Actually, it's not okay.

Listen, just tell Americans the truth. Are we going to have less disposable income going forward? Is our country going to have to make due with less? We will adjust. We will have to adjust. Just be honest with us.

Average Americans have never been extraordinarily wealth as it is. In a day when we have a technological boom with AI, and have just crowned the first trillionaire, what does all this mean for the average American? Is it time for a value change? I understand what you all are saying about prices coming down in the near future. But I'm asking a larger question which you have carefully avoided the majority of times you appear before the media for 10 seconds. What is going on here? Our economy goes through shocks around elections, particularly presidential elections. Seismic economic shocks, and it's been happening for decades, including in the Trump-Biden-Trump interchange. In the carefully manipulated world where everything revolves around elections, we need a reality check.

Despite what popular culture tells us, money is not the most important thing in life. C'mon, America, it's time to "man up," and use the brain that God gave you. Just play the man. We are NOT, at least I'm not, going to fall apart just because we have a little less. Personally, I am not tired of being poor, I'm tired of being treated like a fool. It's my country, just let me know what you're trying to do.

  4. One problem: while us normies feel pain from inflation, the wealthy class profit from inflation via Wall Street. Like Dumbpy Trump began to say “I love the inflation…know why?” He wanted to finish with “…I make money in the stock market by betting on the downside then when the war is over, I’ll bet on the up, making money both ways 😂 like the little piggy laughing all the way home.

  5. Trump is a traitorous, cowardly and cowardly broker!! Trump betrayed both the Iranian people and Israel, and he betrayed the American people by bringing ships and troops to the region, and he didn't even dare to confront a terrorist group in Iran and questioned America's reputation!!! 👎❌👎❌👎❌🇺🇲❌❌

  6. I hope Trump loves this inflation that will motivate their voters to vote against them and vote them out come November. Not trusting Trump’s non laser focus. 💯

  7. He loves it because he’s continuing to make bank off the presidency along with buddies manipulating the market! I can’t afford groceries or gas to get back and forth to work but hey make us pay for a ballroom and a UFC fight at the White House!
