Geely’s Starray EM-i aims to redefine value in the segment for mid-sized family PHEV crossovers. Jonathan Crouch drives it.
Chinese maker Geely’s Starray EM-i is a family-sized Plug-in Hybrid SUV that majors on value and space. Essentially here, the brand is doing for the PHEV segment what it did for EVs with the EX5. And that’s a strong proposition.
Britain is taking time to warm up to Chinese EVs, but with Chinese PHEVs, it seems to be a different story. Both the BYD Seal U-DMi and the Jaecoo 7 SHS have been recent sales hits here, so you’d think the auspices might be good for another similarly-sized Chinese Plug-in Hybrid, this car, the Geely Starray EM-i. Particularly as it easily undercuts both those two rivals on price and makes European, Japanese and Korean segment competitors look ridiculously expensive.

A lot of the facts presented here atr just NOT correct. I have recently bought the Geely Starray EM-i Max 1.5 Electric-Petrol-Hybrid Model in artic white, and yes you have to know how to use a tablet or train yourself to call the correcy orders to "Geely" but apart from that I absolutely love it and would highly recommend it to others. I am impressed with the vast capabilities and whistles and bells also. The boot is massive with the lower part extended to underneath the rear passenger seats. The music system is great more than adequate for my needs. This is one of the smoothest drives I have had in years. I highly recommend that you buy one as the waiting times are getting longer and longer due to demand!
There are better rivals such as the Audi Q5 and Mazda CX-5 which are more styling and have smarter Interiors
I've driven in all 3 cars, BYD, JAECOO and Geely, top range models, by far the Geely out drives them the only compromise I found was that the passenger front seat couldn't be lifted or lowered, but that's it. The range really hit close to the advertised numbers from our PoV, so we're definitely not complaining there. 1 Month in possession at the moment. We're very glad to have chosen this car. Especially for this price range which was amazing. I drive in the Netherlands, so the roads are generally very well maintained, which also influenced the choice.

I like this car and the phev engine technology. Disappointed its not 4WD
I saw an advert for a new VAG car the other day. The advertised spec included “power steering” and “speedo”. The Germans have been taking the mick for too long
I have been assuming that it's pronounced star-ray, rather than starrie. Anyway, I wonder if Geely will introduce any of the drivetrain across to Volvo.
Can we have some reporters telling us if this is a plug in hybrid or self charging hybrid
